Walking toward the Lakes
Andy, Andy and Nigel pacing out down the trail. We came across fellow walkers from all around the world. Many a lot older than us! Although the winds were strong and the skies looked threatening, we only had a small amount of rain. We followed Wainwrights maps to the letter and found them very accurate. We finally arrived at Ennerdale Bridge at 5pm and the people from the Stork Hotel Frizington came and picked us up.
St Bees Beach - official start of the walk
Some blue skies welcomed us. We touched the Irish Sea and collected a pebble before setting off over the headland pictured. We walked around spectacular cliffs in a howling gale. Eventually we headed inland, passing through a number of tiny towns. We traversed farms with sheep, cattle and crops. We crossed kissing styles, forded streams and went through these strange gates. A lot of the time we walked along trails which were boggy and some of the times virtually a stream. We climbed a huge hill, 324m high affording us spectacular views back to the coast and to the Lakes District ahead. The weather windy was mostly fine.
Day 2 - St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge, 23.5km, 8 hours
The team
I woke to a raging storm at 6. By 7 the rain had stopped but the wind was howling. Traditional English breakfast then headed off at 9 after photos and a few false starts.
